During those hours when your family is sleeping or there’s no one home, lower the temperature by up to 10 degrees.
Program your heat to shut off 20 to 30 minutes before you leave the house for the day and to turn back on 20 to 30 minutes before you get home. Similarly, set your thermostat to lower the temperature about one hour before everyone goes to sleep for the night and to raise it again about 30 minutes before everyone wakes up. This way, everyone in your home should be comfortable and you’ll cut down on your heating costs by allowing your home to get cooler during the times no one will notice the drop in your house’s temperature.
Where you put your thermostat matters. Carefully read the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Your thermostat should be installed on an interior wall that doesn’t receive direct sunlight and that is not near any doorways, windows, skylights, or places that could have a draft. You’ll also want to be sure not to put any furniture in front of or under your thermostat.
